It's one of the greatest small cities in the world. All the advantages of a big city but compressed into a human scale. Welcome to Amsterdam.
Despite its village atmosphere, there are enough sides of Amsterdam to suit every kind of visit you wish for.
You're after romance? Amsterdam has more canals than Venice and as many bridges as bars (one thousand or so to escape into). If you are looking to soak up culture, the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Concertgebouw are all in a single neighbourhood; and there are dozens more museums and galleries in the centre of the city to offer you inspiration.
If you want to sample the city's famous liberalism, just follow the wide-eyed tourists to the Red Light District or follow your nose to the nearest coffee shop. And if you want to feed your eyes with architecture, just look around you at the stunning 17th century canal houses.
Senses not yet fulfilled? There are countless international restaurants, and more than enough cafes and clubs to keep you going till your legs give way. But if they do give way, that's okay because as we said, Amsterdam's a compact city and it won't be far to travel till the next location…or your bed. In Amsterdam anywhere is close to everywhere.
citizenM says: be a local and travel by bike. But watch out for evil trams.
