9 rainbow foods you have to try in New York

When our mother told us to “eat the rainbow,” multi-coloured bagels and funfetti sprinkled cupcakes might not be exactly what she had in mind. Nutritional value aside, there’s no denying that rainbow foods attract far more love on Instagram than their beige counterparts. And with rainbows on our mind, after kaleidoscopic Pride celebrations in New York, London and Amsterdam, we thought to keep the theme going and seek out the brightest technicolour eats in the city.

1.rainbow bagels

The humble dish that started it all, these vivid wheels of dough just about broke the internet when they landed on the shelves of The Bagel Store, a quiet bakery in Brooklyn, way back in 2015. These days, the Insta-famous baked goods come in every colour combination of the rainbow. If that’s not enough for you, you can even get these goodies filled with funfetti cream cheese coated in glitter or topped with – wait for it – mini slices of rainbow cake.

2.birthday cake croissants

While few have likely gazed at a croissant thinking, “you know what would make this better? Rainbow sprinkles!”, we’re quite happy that the genius bakers at Union Fare did, because otherwise we’d never have had the pleasure of eating their birthday cake croissants. French pâtissiers are probably turning in their graves, but we’d happily swap cake for this combination of flaky pastry and sweet cream at any celebration.

3.confetti cookie dough

Yet another thing your mum probably told you not to eat as a kid, cookie dough has gone gourmet at Cookie Do NYC. While it tastes like it was just scooped out of the mixing bowl, this edible version is perfectly safe to eat. It also comes topped with sprinkles and chocolate chips, just in case you’re up for tossing on a bit more sugar.

4.iced rainbow latte

The one multi-coloured number on our list that’s a slightly healthier option is from The Good Sort. Their iced rainbow lattes are brightened up without anything artificial. Instead they use matcha, turmeric, blue algae and beetroot to create these vibrant hues. Just make sure to get your Instagram picture before you start swirling that straw – if kindergarten taught us anything, it’s that mixing primary colours is never a good idea.

5.birthday cake truffles

“Every day we’re truffling...” down the block to get our hands on these sweet mouthfuls of rainbow bliss at Momofuku Milk Bar, with balls of their infamous vanilla rainbow cake mixed with vanilla infused milk, coated with white chocolate and rolled in rainbow cake crumbs. Why be content with these bite-sized treats when there’s an entire cake to be had, you may ask? Because two dozen truffles have less calories than an entire cake, of course, saving room to try more rainbow-colored local confections.

6.80s Glam cocktail

Keen to jump on the rainbow bandwagon without feeling like you’re a kid at a birthday party? At Matthew’s, just across the river in New Jersey, you’ll find a very grown-up interpretation of the trend with their 80s Glam cocktail. Gin, passion fruit, lime, lavender and foam are topped with edible glitter for rainbow vibes sans sugar coma.

7.rainbow cupcakes

The rainbow cupcakes at Baked by Melissa might be miniature sized, but they pack even more colour than an intricately tie dyed hippy t-shirt. Best of all, a box of these doubles as the perfect treat to take home and share post-holiday – if you can resist eating them all on the trip back, that is.

8.rainbow ice cream

At this ice cream store you pick the toppings, so how psychadelic your cone goes is totally up to you. Even the ice cream comes in funky shades, with a choice of ube purple yam, matcha green tea or black sesame to sprinkle with cereal, marshmallows, fruity pebbles and everything in between. Less is definitely not more when it comes to Soft Swerve.

9.unicorn freakshake

Choosing between a meal and a milkshake? Why not indulge in one of New Territories’ epic shakes complex to serve as a meal and dessert in one instead. Piled with ice cream, ube, marshmallows, pocky sticks, whipped cream, fruity pebble dust, candy twists and a butterfly for good measure, you won’t know whether to drink it, eat it or wear it.
