fun fact: we're 133 years younger than the North Gate
For dizzying heights – Taipei 101. For six years (from 2004 to 2010), this skyscraper in the Xinyi Commercial Zone was the world's tallest building. The accolade was taken away by the current tallest title owner, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai – but Taipei 101 still makes thousands of visitors dizzy as it always has. Reach the 89th floor in just 37 seconds to admire the miles of incredible views.
For the history buffs – Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. Chances are, you've already seen pictures of this famous building, it's a true centrepiece of the city. Conveniently close to public transport and surrounded by beautiful gardens, the Hall is dedicated to the late Mr Chiang Kai Shek, the leader of the Chinese Nationalists. Catch the changing of the guard outside, and the impressive museum inside.
For ancient China – the National Palace Museum. Behind a Chinese-court style exterior lies an astonishing collection of around 700,000 pieces of ancient Chinese artefacts. Allow plenty of time for your visit to cover the 2 exhibition halls and all 4 floors. Choose a tour or an audio guide in various languages, and remember to take pictures of the views from the outdoor terrace before you take a walk around the gorgeous gardens.
