Amsterdam has a reputation for various vices, but in fact it's one of Europe’s most delightful destinations. Along the canal houses and gezellig brown cafés, you'll enjoy elegant waterside bars, non-boring museums and a flourishing food scene (it's ok to eat your body-weight in gouda cheese). Pack good shoes and a camera – you'll want to remember how you fell head over clogs in love with the 'Dam.
For legendary art – Rembrandt House. For twenty years, Netherlands’ most celebrated artist lived and worked in this house, now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Most of the original features are intact, with a large collection of Rembrandt's sketches and belongings on display.
For canal cruising – Pure Boats. Hop aboard one of their hand-crafted boutique boats for a cruise down Amsterdam's quaint canals. Sit back and let the city float by while you enjoy a classic Dutch tasting platter of cheese, olives, nuts and sweets. There's also a selection of local craft beers and wines on board, as well as a whole load of secrets about Amsterdam's storied canals. This is one not to miss.
For contemporary art – Stedelijk Museum. The Stedelijk (open since 1895!) is one of the city's iconic cultural spots and the best place to take in modern and contemporary art. Stop by for highlights from icons like Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Cindy Sherman. And if your art cravings still aren't satisfied, take note – the Van Gogh Museum, Moco Museum and Rijksmuseum are just steps away on the same square.
