For alfresco art – Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The Hirshhorn’s galleries are home to sculptures, digital media, photography and performance-based pieces, while outside the sculpture-filled gardens are perfect for arty explorations. Be sure to track down Yoko Ono’s famous Wish Tree and one of Yayoi Kusama’s instantly recognizable, Instagram-friendly pumpkins.
For subterranean street art – Dupont Underground. Beneath the bustling streets of Dupont Circle, this long-abandoned network of tunnels and streetcar platforms has been given a fresh lease of life by a community-focused group of artists. Find the entrance on 19th street (it's next to Starbucks) and descend for interactive installations and subterranean graffiti art. Check online for Dupont Underground's calendar of events and exhibitions.
For boundary-pushing exhibitions – Renwick Gallery. Mere steps from the White House, the Renwick Gallery was the US's first purpose-built art museum and is a National Historic Landmark. While it was once dubbed the "American Louvre", the gallery has taken a more edgy turn since its 2015 renovations. Step inside for innovative exhibitions that spotlight American crafts and decorative arts from the 19th to 21st centuries.
